Introducing Tapana: Our Product Branding Team Lead

We caught up with Tapana, to hear what it’s like to work on the Product Team at Delivery Hero. Originally from Thailand, Tapana moved to Europe over nine years ago to start his design career, and this week he gives us the low-down on what it’s like to work at Delivery Hero; from challenges, to hackathons, to lunch at the office, we get an insiders look at the role and the inner workings of the the Product Team.

Tapana, how would you describe your role as Product Branding Team Lead?

Simply put, my role focuses on the connection between brand and product! Within the brand department we have teams who strategise, formulate and create beautiful designs, and it is my role to ensure that these ideas translate to our apps and websites. A major part of the job is to ensure that we are always one step ahead of trends, so I make an effort to keep my finger on the ‘UX pulse’ and ensure that we are introducing the latest features – this results in a lot of conversation between our engineers about how we can make things possible.

Tell us about what brought you to Delivery Hero? Have you always been a designer? 

I have always worked in design, but after a few years of working at a digital consultancy in Milan, I wanted to get stuck into a new challenge. One of the things that drew me to Delivery Hero was the number of sub-brands under the DH umbrella, which means I am working on multiple brands at any given time. This involves a lot of multitasking and constant communication with various different teams, which keeps it exciting! 

Typical agency life see’s clients coming and going but you never get the opportunity to see projects evolve and experience the results. Here at Delivery Hero, I get to see our projects at every phase, and once they go live we can see the immediate impact and continue the development.

 What does a typical day look like for you? 

It’s continuously changing depending on what projects are happening, but one thing that remains a constant is our team’s stand-up call to discuss priorities and jobs for the week ahead. My morning is typically spent focusing on current tasks and catching up with other departments about projects for our international portfolio of brands. Of course, lunchtime is always a highlight for me! We have a beautiful kitchen space at Delivery Hero and this is an opportunity to chat with colleagues from other teams and eat lunch together. 

This week I am participating in a hackathon with other product teams across the business, which is a great opportunity to connect with designers from all corners of the globe. The idea is that you are given briefs that must be completed within a quick time frame, the results are then judged by senior stakeholders in the business. It’s a great way to generate new ideas and quickly come up with new concepts.

As Team Lead, how do you keep the momentum up? 

We are constantly in contact with each other, whether that be in the office or sharing ideas across our communication channels. Every Thursday we have a design critique meeting where teammates can present their project and the team can discuss what they like and ideas on how to improve. We will always have a ‘Shakeout’ meeting where we connect on a Friday afternoon and talk about how the week played out. We ask everyone to score their week out of 10, which really helps us to keep track of workflow and gain a sense of feeling across the team – if anyone has had a particularly challenging week we will discuss it to understand what we need to put in place so that everyone can continue to create their best work.

What would you say your main challenges are? 

I am always pushing myself to learn new things, go beyond the boundaries of what I know and learn new tools. It’s really important for us to stay ahead of the curve so we can ensure our customers are getting the best experience possible.

Let’s talk about highlights! Are there any projects that have stood out to you? 

I love working on our Everyday Roastery coffee brand, and I am so excited to see the new additions come to life that we are currently building. I saw this project being brought to market and seeing the results that it has achieved makes me proud! Simply, the product is coffee, but the combination of the brand concept and its unique design makes it go above and beyond a normal coffee brand.

What would be your advice to someone wanting to work in the product team at Delivery Hero? What qualities do they need? 

There needs to be an element of design instinct and curiosity – a genuine interest for how we can make experiences better for customers and improve products. A huge part of the job is the continuation of development- how we can maintain the signature look and feel of a brand, but continue to create better versions of it. There needs to be a hunger to learn!

What’s the best thing about working at Delivery Hero? 

There isn’t just one thing! For me, the people who I work with make the job special. There are so many different nationalities working here, and everyone is friendly and helpful. You get a sense that everyone wants to collaborate and achieve something great.

If you weren’t a designer, what else would you be doing? 

When I was growing up I wanted to be a Doctor! But I realised that the right side of my brain, the creative side, was much stronger-  which is why I went down the design path.

 Favourite thing about living in Berlin? 

Berlin always has something going on- you can never be bored in this city! It’s super international and I feel as though everyone is so open and accepting of one another, regardless of where they are from or what they do. Everyone is equal!
